New Scorecard Developments – 2018 and Beyond

Our Smartphone Survey showed that most members have smartphones and know how to use them with APP and websites.

We will be exploring Mobile Data Entry to get our weekly tournament scores in faster, more accurately, with less time, and less cost.  This would eventually replace the green Universal Scorecard.  Each tee group would complete the electronic scorecard AFTER their round just like we do with the green card on an available smartphone.  Once completed, the form would be sent electronically to OurGolfStats.

Completing the electronic scorecard will take 3 to 5 minutes if you have all your player hole scores from you course scorecard.  (THE ELECTRONIC SCORECARD 0IS NOT TO BE USED FOR SCORES ON THE COURSE!)

While on the course, use course scorecards, announce all players hole score at the end of a hole and write these down.  Use these agreed hole scores for the electronic scorecard.

We will still use “course” scorecards as a backup until we have a better backup alternative.

Web Page Test Scorecard

We have a sample scorecard form for all to try out.  This version is web page based.  Anyone can open the scorecard, input data and submit to a storage on our server.

Simply click on the link, enter the information and “submit”.  No IDs, no Passwords, no sign-ups required.

Most of the form is point and click.  Easy, fast and accurate.  Nine and eighteen scores are totaled automatically.  Form in test includes only Division 1 names and numbers, but all 2018 courses and tee locations are installed.

This is a work in progress so you comments and feedback are needed.

APP Version for Android Smartphones

This same scorecard is also available as a APP for Android smartphones.  You must install the ODK (Open Data Kit) app from the Google Play Store.   Then I can provide the needed links to get the Scorecard Form loaded.  The form has the required information to submit the data.

  1. This will take longer to fill out than the green card. I can see more time being wasted by all members if they are going to fill these in after the round. Someone is still going to have to call out the numbers while another golfer plugs them in. I feel the only thing this saves is the postage to mail them in and maybe the scorers can leave a little earlier,
which I doubt! They should still have to wait for the course score card. The benefits of this procedure are very limitted.

  2. Electronic entry of green card information worked fine. Might take a little longer than by pencil but not much and the potential benefits seem worth it!

This should simplify and speed up the starter process immediately as I see no need to verify IDs.

Eventually maybe we could electronically sign in and submit scores and greatly simplify the process? Electronically accept sign and in the verification note group # and if the group needs to place and/or pick up CTP markers. Also handle singles automatically.

Worth trying so let’s do it!

  3. I used the test scorecard using the Division 1 player listing. I used my laptop and found it to be very user friendly. I will have to try it on my smart phone.

  4. Don’t see this as a way to speed up completion of the green card. May speed up the total processing of data for a given round and posting of results. However, that’s not a benefit to the member, since once they submit the finished green card it’s out of their hands. Time to complete green card and get out the door will be quicker using manual method.

  5. I didn’t finish my thought before submitting my comments…………I found the trial scorecard user friendly and with practice on a smart phone it will probably enhance and speed up the data process. It would probably eliminate one “handoff” to another person who inputs the green card scores

  6. Looks like this approach will work fine saving time and money. Are the green cards going to be used in 2018 alongside the app until a decision is made to go with the app? Expect some reluctance to change with this age group. Some do not have smartphones so I assume another golfer in the playing group will input the scores. I do not think it is a good idea for the scorers for the week to input the scores. Eventually I would think the app will be THE source for scores. If some members balk at this data entry, will the scorecard be used? This would seem counterproductive.
